Winter (January–March, December) Mushrooms

Velvet shank is a winter mushroom. It grows through most of the winter on stumps and logs. You may also be lucky enough to find velvet shank where young willow and other deciduous trees have been cut back – along railways, in thickets and other semi-mature stands. But you can also find it in deciduous forest or in parks.
